India
Placement Program
Love Basket has been placing babies, toddlers and older
children from India since 1982. Through the years,
this program has remained a consistent source of children for the adoptive
families we serve.
We have two adoption programs in India, one based in Chennai (Madras) and
the other in New Delhi.
Adoption Requirements
Couples must have been in a stable relationship for at least 5 years with
a minimum 3 years of marriage. The minimum age is 30 years and the
maximum age is 45 years for the younger spouse- no more than 90 years
total for the combined ages of both spouses. Single women who have
never been married, widowed, or divorced between the ages of 30-45 may
apply . Previous divorce
is acceptable for married couples. Some Indian courts may require
adoptive parents to have an infertility problem or issue ( a letter from
your doctor will be required for the court dossier), and to have two or
fewer children in the home unless you are adopting a child with special
needs. Call or email
our office to discuss your particular situation.
We seek applicants with an active Christian faith. A reference from your
Pastor/Priest will be required with our
Packet II. Please note that those of Asia Indian background or nationality
are accepted to adopt from India without the religious faith requirement.
Because bonding with your child is so important, particularly just after
he/she arrives home, we require that one
parent stay home to take care of the child for at least 60 days beginning
when your child arrives at your home.
Spouses may alternate time off to cover the 60 days.

How does the India program work?
Once your Application Packets I and II are accepted, you will need to
obtain a Home Study in your state of
residence. Once your Home Study is
approved, we will work together with
you to complete your foreign court
dossier and Immigration paperwork.
You are then ready for child referral!
You will receive photos, a medical
summary and any social history we
have for that child. You are encouraged
to review this information with a medical
professional (preferably one familiar
with international adoptions) in making
your decision about accepting the child.
Once you accept the referral, we help you prepare your dossier and file it
in the Indian court. The processing time in India varies from case to case
but averages 9-12 months in Chennai. After his/her Indian passport and
U.S. entry visa is issued overseas one of the adoptive parents must travel to
bring the child home.
How old are most of the children who
are adopted from India?
Most of the children adopted from India through Love Basket are female and
will most likely be 36 months or older at the time of assignment. What can we specify about our
prospective adoptive child?
You can tell us the age range and
sex of the child you wish to adopt. You
can tell us whether or not
you would
accept a sibling group and you can
delineate handicaps you feel prepared
to accept (if any).
Can we be on both the international and domestic waiting lists?
Yes. However, there are non-refundable fees in each program that will not
transfer between programs. You may switch from one list to the other
during the process by letting us know in writing before a child can be
referred to you. Additional paperwork may be required.
