Adoption Assistance Fund
In all of our adoption programs we sometimes have children that are
considered special needs. In the U.S. we have African American and
Biracial babies that are sometimes harder to locate families for. In India
and Romania we also have older children that are harder to place and
children born with abnormalities. This fund is used to pay for surgeries
for correctable abnormalities and to offset adoption expenses for parents
willing to adopt any special needs child.
What is the Adoption Assistance Fund and how does it work?
The Adoption Assistance Fund was created and has been recently expanded to
assist children who otherwise might find it difficult to be placed in a
family due to special needs (older children, children in our international
programs, children with a medical problem(s), etc.).
Decisions regarding assisting a family and the amount of any assistance
are made by Love Basket’s Application Review Committee. Materials reviewed
from the child’s perspective include medical, social and other background
information that is available.
From the parent’s perspective, decisions regarding whether or not
Adoption Assistance would apply in their situation cannot be made
until the prospective parents have successfully completed Love Basket’s
Application Packets I and II and have obtained an approved Home Study.
Final determination of possible funding is made during the child referral
phase of the process, since the needs of the child are major
factors taken into consideration. Grants (or a reduction in fees) of up to
several thousand dollars may be available for qualifying adoptions.
What other financial assistance may be available?
There is currently a Federal Adoption Tax Credit available — you may be
eligible for a sizable tax credit ($10,000) on your Federal Income Tax
Return. Please consult your tax attorney or CPA for further details.
(Please note: as an adoption agency, we are not qualified in the field of
tax law and/or tax form preparation.)
Some states, such as Missouri, offer a State Adoption Tax Credit as well —
again please consult your tax preparer for further details.
Children of color born to birth families in Missouri may be eligible for
Adoption Subsidy funds through the State of Missouri. Application for
consideration of these funds must be submitted to the State of Missouri
(we will gladly help you with this process!) before the adoption is
finalized. If approved, once we notify the State of Missouri that the
adoption has been finalized, you may receive a reimbursement of up to
$2,000 for your adoption expenses. Other benefits may be available given
certain circumstances surrounding the placement, but need to be discussed
on a case-by-case basis, as not all placements qualify.
Your state of residence, if other than Missouri, may have a program that
can help you. Be sure to inquire of your Home Study preparer.
Finally, you might want to check with your employer to see if your company
offers any financial assistance with adoption-related expenses — many do
now, and yours may be one of them!
Crisis Pregnancy Counseling
For every woman in the U.S. that places her baby for adoption we counsel a
number that choose to parent. Our crisis pregnancy counseling is offered
free of charge to birthmothers and their families, regardless of their
final decision.
Birthparent Assistance Fund
Many times while counseling a woman in crisis pregnancy there are needs
that legally cannot be met by the adoptive parents. This fund allows us to
provide necessities such as housing, food, clothing and cleaning supplies
during a woman’s pregnancy to ensure a healthy, safe mother and baby.
