September 2007
Rules for placing children
have recently changed in Ukraine. The present emphasis appears to be
on placing children age four and older, with children younger than four
years rarely if ever available.
Adoption Requirements
Couples who have been married at least three years and single women are
welcome to apply. Previous divorce is acceptable. Infertility is not
required.
There is also no limit on the number of children already in your home.
Applicants are sought who have an active Christian faith. A reference from
your Pastor/Priest will be required with your Packet II.
Because bonding with your child is so important particularly just after
he/she arrives home, we require that one parent stay home to take care of
the child for at least 60 days beginning when your child arrives in your
home. Spouses may alternate time off to cover the 60 days. At the present
time, travel is is required.

How
does the Ukrainian program work?
Once your Application Packets I and II are accepted, you will need to
obtain a Home Study in your state of residence. Once your Home Study is approved, we
will work together with you to complete
your foreign court dossier, Immigration paperwork, and obtain valid
passports.
Your completed dossier will be sent to The
National Adoption Center in Kiev for review. Once they have
processed your dossier, you will be "invited" to come to Kiev (both
parents are required to travel), where you will be met and escorted by
someone from our Facilitating Team to a meeting with the Director and
staff of the National Adoption Center. You will be shown a picture
and brief medical information on a waiting child at a particular
orphanage who meets your general adoption criteria. Upon arrival at
the
orphanage, you will meet the orphanage Director who will review with you
the information from the child's medical file. You will then have
the option of meeting the child, who will be brought into the Director's
office. You will be encouraged to spend time with the child as you
make the decision whether to move forward with the adoption of that child.

How old are most of the children adopted from the Ukraine?
Most children from the Ukraine are at least 15 months old before they are
available for adoption, although children with special needs may be
available at a younger age. You may ask to
receive the referral of a younger child,
but older children ages 2 and up are
more readily available.
What can we specify about our
prospective adoptive child?
You can tell us the age range and
sex of the child you wish to adopt. You
can tell us whether or not you would
accept a sibling group. You can
delineate handicaps you will accept (if
any). Keep in mind that the broader the
range you will accept, or if you are
comfortable adopting either a boy or
girl, the quicker the referral of a child
may be.
Can we be on both the international and domestic waiting
list? Yes, but there are non-refundable fees
involved in each program. You may
switch from one list to the other during
the process by letting us know in writing
before a child can be referred to you.
Additional paperwork may be required.
